2、ions.Inthefirstcase,a1990–1992disputebetweentheUnitedSteelworkersofAmericaandtheRavenswoodAluminumCorporation,unionworkersdevelopedaninternationalcampaigntopressurethecorporationtorehirethemaftertheyhadbeenlockedoutinadisputeoverhealthandsafetyissues.Inthesecondcase,a1998disputebetweentheUnitedA
3、utoWorkersandGeneralMotors,strikesbyworkersatjusttwoplantsinFlint,Michiganoverthecorporation’splanstointroducenewworkrulesresultedinthevirtualshutdownofGMforseveralweeks.Drawingonthesetwocases,Isuggestthat,inchallengingtransnationallyorganizedemployers,workersmayonsomeoccasionsbestachievetheirgo
4、alsthroughengaginginpracticesoftransnationalsolidarityaimedatmatchingtheglobalorganizationoftheiremployer(“organizingglobally”),whereasonotheroccasionstheymaybeabletodosothroughhighlyfocusedlocalactions(“organizinglocally”)againststrategicpartsofacorporation.Ofcourse,whichofthesetwostrategiesism
5、ostlikelytosucceedinparticularcaseswilldependonacoterieofcontingencies,suchashowinterconnectedthecorporation’scomponentpartsare.However,thefactthatdifferentgeographicalstrategiesmaybeopentoworkerschallenginggloballyorganizedcapitalmeansatleasttwothings.First,someworkersmaynothavetoorganizeatthes
6、amegeographicalscale(ieglobally)ascorporationsinordertochallengethem.Second,throughtheirchoicesofwhichstrategytopursue,workersareclearlyshapingtheveryprocessofglobalizationitselfandthenewglobalgeographieswhichglobalizationisauguring.IntroductionGlobalizationcontinuestotransformthetime-spaceorgan
7、izationofcapitalism.Theshrinkingofrelativedistancesbetweenplacesandthespeedingupofsocialandeconomiclifethatiscentraltothistrans-formationarehavingsignificantimplicationsforworkersandunionstrategy.However,althoughneoliberalid
