2、ronicVascular,ParkmoreIndustrialEstate,Galway,IrelandAccepted30July2004AbstractIntravascularstentsofvariousdesignsarecurrentlyinusetorestorepatencyinatheroscleroticcoronaryarteriesandithasbeenfoundthatdifferentstentshavedifferentin-stentrestenosisrates.Ithasbeenhypothesizedthatthelevelofvascul
3、arinjurycausedtoavesselbyastentdeterminesthelevelofrestenosis.Computationalstudiesmaybeusedtoinvestigatethemechanicalbehaviourofstentsandtodeterminethebiomechanicalinteractionbetweenthestentandthearteryinastentingprocedure.Inthispaper,wetestthehypothesisthattwodifferentstentdesignswillprovoked
4、ifferentlevelsofstresswithinanatheroscleroticarteryandhencecausedifferentlevelsofvascularinjury.Thestentsanalysedusingthefinite-elementmethodweretheS7(MedtronicAVE)andtheNIR(BostonScientific)stentdesigns.AnanalysisofthearterialwallstressesinthestentedarteriesindicatesthatthemodularS7stentdesignc
5、auseslowerstresstoanatheroscleroticvesselwithalocalizedstenoticlesioncomparedtotheslottedtubeNIRdesign.Theseresultscorrelatewithobservedclinicalrestenosisrates,whichhavefoundhigherrestenosisratesintheNIRcomparedwiththeS7stentdesign.Therefore,thetestingmethodologyoutlinedhereisproposedasapre-cl
