2、enthimtoCambridgetostudytheologywithaviewtoturninghimintoacountryparson,butDarwinbecamefascinatedbygeologyandnaturalhistory,impressinghistutorssomuchthattheyrecommendedhimforavacancythataroseasanunpaidnaturalistandcompanionfortheCaptainonthevoyageoftheBeagle.Theround-the-worldvoyagelastedfrom1831

3、to1836,andgaveDarwinarareinsightintothegeologyofdifferentpartsoftheglobeandthevarietyoflifeonEarth.Backhome,hefoundhehadareputationasageologist,basedonthereportsandmaterialshehadsentbackduringthevoyage,butwasnotknownasanaturalistatall.Althoughhealmostimmediatelycameupwiththeideaofnaturalselection

4、,hesetaboutestablishingareputationinbiologybeforethinkingaboutpublishingit.Indeed,heonlypublishedatallwhenAlfredRusselWallacecameupwiththesameideaindependently.Darwinwasasemi-invalidformostofhislife,perhapsaresultofatropicalinfectionpickeduponthevoyage,andlivedinseclusioninKentsurroundedbyalargef
