2、revisionreceived24May1995,accepted8June1995)SummaryInthisstudy,wedevelopedaratmodelofincisionalpain.A1-cmlongitudinalincisionwasmadethroughskin,fasciaandmuscleoftheplantaraspectofthehindpawinhalothane-anesthetizedrats.WithdrawalresponsesweremeasuredusingvonFreyfilamentsatdiffere

3、ntareasaroundthewoundbeforesurgeryandforthenext6days.Acumulativepainscorebasedontheweightbearingbehavioroftheanimalswasalsoutilized.Theresultsoftestsforwithdrawalresponsesandscoresbasedonweightbearingsuggestthatasurgicalincisionoftheratfootcausesareliableandquantifiablemechanica

4、lhyperalgesialastingforseveraldaysaftersurgery.Anincisionthatonlyincludedskinandfasciabutnotmuscleinthefootcausedlessseverehyperalgesiaduringtheinitialpostoperativeperiod.Distinctareasaroundthewoundhaddifferentwithdrawalthresholdsduringthestudyperiod.Evenremotesitesasmuchas10mmf

5、romthewoundshowedpersistentmechanicalhyperalgesia.Selectivedenervationsoftherathindpawpriortofootincisionrevealedboththesuralandtibialnerveswereresponsiblefortransmittinginputfromtheincisionthatproduceshyperalgesia.Thismodelshouldallowustounderstandmechanismsofsensitizationcause
