2、orporaoflearnerCMCarelesscommonlyinvestigated.TaggingofpartsofspeechandcomparingL2andnativespeakers’samplesshedlightonthedifferencesbetweenwrittenandcomputer-mediatedlanguagewhencomparedwithsamplesofmoretraditionaltexts.Inthisstudy,theauthorusedatrainedversionofaBrillpartofspeechtaggertotag,studyan
3、danalyzethreecorpora’strigrams.Thethreecorporawere:(1)asynchronousnativespeakerCMC,(2)non-nativespeakerCMC,and(3)asetofnewspaperarticles.Theanalysisfoundthatthenon-nativespeakerssharedthenewspapers’characteristicsofrepeatedtrigrams,butdissimilarpartofspeechtrigrams.Italsofoundthatthenon-nativespeak
4、ers’CMCsharedanumberofpopularpartofspeechtrigramswiththenativespeakerCMCcorpus,hintingatastructuraldifferenceincomputer-mediateddiscourse.Thearticlequestionsifcommonlyusedpedagogicallytexts,suchasnewspaperarticles,canaddresstheuniquenessofCMCandareas“authentic”aswegenerallyconsiderthemtobe.Implicat
5、ionsforteachingandL2materialsdevelopmentarediscussed.1.IntroductionAnumberofscholarlyjournalsoutsidecomputationallinguisticshaverunspecialissuestoinvestigatethepedagogicalapplicationsofusingcorporaforlearningandlearningdesigns(Tribble&Barlow2001).Themostcommonusesofcorporaaretoaidinstructionwithnat
6、ivespeakerexamplesandprovidecollocationstoinquisitivelearners;however,thegreatestdemandsinthefieldofComputer-assistedlanguagelearning(CALL)arenotforlexicalcollocations,butforcomputerstoprovideautomaticnativespeakinginterlocutorsanderrorcorrectionforstudents(Atwelletal.2000).Thuscomputationallinguis
