4、ion,i.e.thetendencyofmorefrequentwordstobeshorter.Hereweevaluatetherobustnessoftheselawsincontextswheretheyhavenotbeenexploredyettoourknowl-edge.Therecoveryofthelawsagaininnewconditionsprovidessupportforthehypothesisthattheyoriginatefromabstractmechanisms.Keywords:Zipf’slaw·Polysemy·Brevity·Wor
5、dfrequency1IntroductionThelinguistGeorgeKingsleyZipf(1902–1950)isknownforhisinvestigationsonstatisticallawsoflanguage[20,21].PerhapsthemostpopularoneisZipf’slawforwordfrequencies[20],thatstatesthatthefrequencyofthei-thmostfrequentwordinatextfollowsapproximatelyf∝i−α(1)wherefisthefrequencyofthat
6、word,itheirrankororderandαisaconstant(α≈1).Zipf’slawforwordfrequenciescanbeexplainedbyinformationtheo-reticmodelsofcommunicationandisarobustpatternoflanguagethatpresentsinvariancewithtextlength[9]butdependencywithrespecttothelinguisticunitsconsidered[5].Thefocusofthecurrentpaperareacoupleofling
