2、AbstractRecentworkinpsychologyandlinguisticshasshownthatfrequencyofoccurrenceisanimportantdeterminantoflanguageacquisition,languageuse,anddiachronicchange.Thispapersurveystheeffectsoffrequencyontheuseanddevelopmentoflanguageandconsidersthepsychologicalmechanismsthatunderliethevariousfrequencyeffect
3、s.Thepapershowsthatfrequencyhasanimpactontheemergenceoflinguisticstructureandthatsomewell-knowncross-linguistictendenciesarisefromfrequencyeffects.r2007ElsevierLtd.Allrightsreserved.0.IntroductionOneofthemostbasicprinciplesofmodernlinguisticsistherigiddivisionbetweengrammarandlanguageuse,whichisrefl
4、ectedinChomsky’sdichotomyofcompetenceandperformance.Basedonthisdivision,itiscommonlyassumedthatgrammaticalstructuresareindependentoftheiruse;thatis,inthisapproachgrammarisseenasaclosedandstablesystemthatisnotaffectedbypragmaticandpsycholinguisticprinciplesinvolvedinlanguageuse.Thisviewofgrammarhasb
5、eenchallengedinrecentyears,bothinpsychologyandlinguistics.Inspiredbyresearchwithconnectionistmodels,psychologistsandcognitivescientistshavearguedthatgrammaticalstructuresemergefromprocessinglinguisticdata.Inthisapproach,grammarisadynamicalsystemthatisconstantlychangingbyvirtueofpsychologicalprocess
