3、gnitives~Tlsand,thus,thatachild'sgrammaticalcompetenceimpliestheexistenceofsomeinnatesetofprinciplesforthegenerationoflanguage.Incontrast,thepresentapproachhypothesizesthatachild'scognitiveskillsduringthefirst2years,particularlynonverbalrepresentationalabilities,n
4、otonlyprecedebutenhancehissubsequentacquisitionoflanguage.Theassumptionthattheitemsoftheproposedscaletogethertestacommonabilitywassupportedbyamultidimensionalhomogeneityanalysisofthescale,whichindicatedthatitdefinesanessentiallyunitaryabilitydimensionandalsohasstr
5、ongordinalcharacteristics.INTRODUCTIONSomelinguists(e.g.,Chomsky,1965;Lenneberg,1967;McNeiU,1966)havesuggestedthatchildren'searlylinguisticdevelopmentisnotcompatiblewiththeircognitiveskills,sinceachildof4years,whilenotpossessinganelaboratevocabulary,canexhibitthef
