2、hercivillawcountries,butalsoexercisedaprofoundinfluenceonmanyofthemostcreativejuristsandlegalscholarsinEnglandandtheUnitedStates.Nevertheless,tracingtheinfluenceofanindividualisalwaysadifficulttask.ItisespeciallydifficultasregardsSavignyandtheapproachtolawandlegals
3、ourcespropoundedbytheHistoricalSchool.Thisdifficultyarises,inpart,becauseSavignywasnotaloneinadoptingthisapproach.Hugo,forinstance,espousedquitesimilarideasinGermany;GeorgeLongechoedmanyoftheseconceptsinEnglandduringthe1850s,and,ofcourse,SirHenrySumnerMainealsoespo
4、usedmanyofthesesameconceptscentraltohistoricaljurisprudenceinEnglandinthe1860sand1870s.Thus,whenonelooksatthedoctrinalwritingsofBritishandAmericanjuristsandlegalscholarsintheperiodbefore1875,itisoftenimpossibletosaywithanycertaintythataparticularideawhichsoundsvery
5、muchthesortofthingthatmight,indeed,havebeenderivedfromSavigny'sworks,was,infact,soderived.Itispossible,nevertheless,totracemuchoftheinfluenceofSavignyandhislegalwritingsintheUnitedStatesandinGreatBritainduringthisperiodwithsomecertaintybecausesogreatwashisfameandso
