2、sex.ac.ukMarch2010AbstractThereareabundantliteraturesonlinkagesbetweenmigration,remittancesanddevelopment,betweengenderandmigration,andbetweengenderanddevelopment.Themissinglinkinthissetofoverlappingliteraturesisgenderandremittances.Thusfar,somestudieshavetriedtodeterminewhetherf
3、emalemigrantsare‘better’remittersthanmen:resultsaremixed.Butthisisnottherightquestion.Itismoreimportanttoexplorehowgenderrelationsshapethesending,receiptandutilisationofremittances;andhow,inturn,theremittanceprocessreshapesgenderrelations.ThispapertakesthecaseofrecentAlbanianmigr
4、ationtoneighbouringGreece–oneofpost-communistEurope’slargestcross-bordermigrations–toillustratehowthepatriarchalnatureofthesendingsociety,Albania,fundamentallyshapesboththegenderedpatternofmigrationanditsequallygenderedcorollary,remittances.Basedonquestionnairesurvey(n=350)andin-
5、depthinterview(n=45)datafromfieldworkinruralsouth-eastAlbaniaandtheGreekcityofThessaloniki,itisshownthatthemale-structuredprocessofmigrationhardlyallowswomentoremit,evenwhentheyareearninginGreece.Typologiesofhousehold-to-householdremittancesaredeveloped.Interviewdatarevealsthatmi
6、grationtoGreece,anditsattendantremittanceflows,doesgive,withinlimits,increasedagencytowomenwithinboththemigrantandresidualhouseholds,butthingsareonthewholeslowtochange.relationshipbetweenmigrationandtheIntroductiondevelopmentofmigrantsourcecountries.Withinthefast-growingliteratur
