3、changeofdirection?Isthisthestartofanewconjuncture?Gramsciarguedthat,thoughtheeconomicmustneverbeforgotten,conjuncturalcrisesareneversolelyeconomic,oreconomically-determined‘inthelastinstance’.Theyarisewhenanumberofcontradictionsatworkindifferentkeypractices
4、andsitescometogether-or‘con-join’-inthesamemomentandpoliticalspaceand,asAlthussersaid,‘fuseinarupturalunity’.Analysisherefocusesoncrisesandbreaks,andthedistinctivecharacterofthe‘historicsettlements’whichfollow.Thecondensationofforcesduringaperiodofcrisis,an

6、mspecificSoundingshistoricalcircumstances.However,theyalsoseemtosharesomeconsistentunderlyingfeatures,tobeconnectedintheirgeneralthrustanddirectionoftravel.Paradoxically,opposedpoliticalregimeshaveallcontributedindifferentwaystoexpandingthisproject.Theterm
7、‘neoliberal’isnotasatisfactoryone.Itsreferencetotheshapinginfluenceofcapitalismonmodernlifesoundsrecidivisttocontemporaryears.Intellectualcriticssaythetermlumpstogethertoomanythingstomeritasingleidentity;itisreductive,sacrificingattentiontointernalcomplexit
