3、orre-spondingstabilitymarginspredictionareveryimportantinpowersystemplanningandoperation,andcanprovidesignificanthelptopowersystemoperatorswithpreventingstabilityproblems.Stochasticsubspaceidentificationisproposedinthisthesisasatechniquetoextractthecriticalmode(s)fromthemeasuredambient

4、noisewithoutrequiringartificialdisturbances(e.g.alineoutage),allowingthesecriticalmodestobeusedasanon-lineindex,whichisreferredheretoasSystemIdentificationStabilityIndices(SISI)topredicttheclosestoscillatoryinstability.TheSISIisnotonlyindependentofsystemmodelsandtrulyrepresentativeofth

5、eactualsystem,butalsocomputationallyefficient.Inaddition,readilyavailablesignalsinapowersystemandseveralidentificationmethodsarecategorized,andmeritsandpitfallsofeachoneareaddressedinthiswork.Thedampingtorqueoflinearizedmodelsofpowersystemsisstudiedinthisthesisasanotherpossibleon-linese

6、curityindex.Thisindexisestimatedbymeansofpropersystemidentificationtechniquesappliedtobothpowersystemtransientresponseandambientnoise.ThedampingtorqueindexisshowntoaddresssomeofdrawbacksoftheSISI.Thisthesisalsodemonstratestheconnectionbetweenthesecondorderstatisticalproperties,includi

7、ngconfidenceintervals,oftheestimatedelectromechanicalmodesandthevarianceofmodelparameters.TheseanalysesshowthatMonte-Carlotypeofexperimentsorsimulationscanbeavoided,henceresultinginasignificantreductioninthenumberofsamples.Inthesetypesofstudies,themodelsavailableinsimulationpackagesare
