3、ondthoselimitscanleadtoequipmentfailuresandblackouts.Securitymarginsmeasuretheamountbywhichsystemloadsorpowertransferscanchangebeforeasecurityviolation,suchasanoverloadedtransmissionline,isencountered.Thisthesisshowshowtoefficientlycomputesecuritymarginsdefinedbylimitin
4、geventsandinstabilities,andthesensitivityofthosemarginswithrespecttoassump-tions,systemparameters,operatingpolicy,andtransactions.Securitymarginstovoltagecollapseblackouts,oscillatoryinstability,generatorlimits,voltageconstraintsandlineoverloadsareconsidered.Theusefu
5、lnessofcomputingthesensitivitiesofthesemarginswithrespecttointerareatransfers,loadingparameters,generatordis-patch,transmissionlineparameters,andVARsupportisestablishedfornetworksaslargeas1500buses.Thesensitivityformulaspresentedapplytoarangeofpowersystemmodels.Conve
6、ntionalsensitivityformulassuchaslinedistributionfactors,outagedistributionfactors,participationfactorsandpenaltyfactorsareshowntobespecialcasesofthegeneralsensitivityformulasderivedinthisthesis.Thesensitivityformulasreadilyaccommodatesparsematrixtechniques.Marginsens
7、itivitymethodsareshowntoworkeffectivelyforavoidingvoltagecollapseblackoutscausedbyeithersaddlenodebifurcationofequilibriaorimmediateinstabilityduetogeneratorreactivepowerlimits.Extremelyfastcontingencyanalysisforvoltagecollapsecanbeimplementedwithmarginsensitivitybase
