3、2,themaincontributinggreenhousegasforclimatechange.SinceelectricpowergenerationisalocationspecificandintensivesourceofCO2emissions,focusingonreductionsinthissectorcanhaverelativelyrapidandsignificanteffectsonoverallCO2levels.Inthiscontext,thisthesismakesthreeprincipa

4、lcontributions.First,theeffectivenessofwindpowerforcarbonmanagementofelectricpowersystemsisassessed.WindpowerisconsideredasacriticaltechnologytoproduceelectricitywithoutCO2emissions.However,windpowerisavariablesourceofelectricityandpowersystemsoperatedwithwindpower

5、mustensuresystemreliabilitybyfirmingwindvariations.Inthiswork,usingtheAlbertaelectricsystemasacasestudy,theeffectivenessofwindpowerforcarbonmanagementisassessedtakingtheancillarycostsandemissionsassociatedwithfirmingwindpowervariationintoaccount.OperationsoftheAlbert

6、aelectricsystemwithdifferentlevelsofwindpenetrationaresimulatedusingdispatchmodelsthathavesufficientresolutiontocapturethedynamicsofwindvariations.Themainresultofthisworkisasetofcarbonabatementsupplycurves.Second,astochasticdecisionsupportmodelthatcanbeusedforoperati

7、onaldecisionmakingofawindpowerplant(WPP)andacompressedairenergystoragesystem(CAES)thatjointlyparticipateinadayaheadelectricitymarketisdeveloped.Thismodelinherentlytakestheuncertaintyofwindandmarketpriceofelectricityandderivestheoptimaloperatingrulesthatmaximizepro
