2、eholds,accordingtoStatisticsSouthAfrica(StatsSA).●Altogether9158000(70%)ofthoseemployedwereAfricans.Colouredpeopleaccountedfor1495000(11%),Indiansfor484000(4%),andwhitepeoplefor1981000(15%).Thesepopulationgroups’relativesharesoftheeconomicallyactivepopulationwere,respectively,74%,11%,3%,and1
3、2%.●Ofthe4364000unemployedpeople,some3740000(86%)wereAfrican.●Theofficialunemploymentrateinthefirstquarterof2011was25%.TheunemploymentratewashighestamongAfricans(29%)andlowestamongwhites(6%).●Whileunemploymentfellby31000from2010to2011andtheunemploymentrateremainedat25%,thenumberofdiscouraged
4、workseekers—thosewhoarewillingandabletoworkbutwhohavegivenuplookingforjobs—rosefrom1870000in2010to2223000.Thisrepresentsanincreaseof353000or19%inoneyear.●Accordingtotheexpandeddefinitionofunemployment,whichincludesallpeoplewhowanttoworkregardlessofwhethertheyareactivelylookingforwork,thenum-
5、berofunemployedpeoplegrewfrom6609000in2001to7532000in2011,andtheunemploymentraterosefrom34.6%to36.5%.●Anemploymentservicesagency,Adcorp,challengedtheofficialemploymentfigures.AdcorpsuggestedthatStatsSAundercountsthoseemployedintheinformalsectorbyaboutsixmillion.AdcorpalsosuggestedthatStatsSA
6、wasnotincludingthelargenumberofillegalimmigrantswhomaybeworkinginthecountry.Adcorpestimatesunemploymentat8%,significantlylowerthantheofficialrateof25%.Theministerinthepresidencyfornationalplanning,MrTrevorManuel,defendedStatsSAinParliament.HesaidthattheQuarterlyLabourForceSurvey(QLFS)conduct
7、edbyStatsSAwasahouseholdsurvey,andthereforecapturedillegalimmigrantsandworkersintheinformaleconomy.HesaidthattheQLFShadbeendesignedinaccordancewithInternationalLabourOrganisationstandards,andsuggestedthatAdcorphadahiddenagendaastheiranalysishadbeen
