3、hy.3Thissadfactispartlyduetothescarcityoftranslationsbutmorefunda-mentallytothelackofreliablemoderneditionsofprimarytextsandthusofgoodcriticalanalysesandstudiesoftheminthesecondaryliterature.Thesituationdoesnotarisefromanylackofrawmaterialsbutin-stead,itmightbeargued,fr
4、omjusttheopposite.Therearemanyearlyprintededitionsfromthelatefifteenthandearlysixteenthcenturiesandanenormousnumberofsurvivingmanuscriptsofmedievalphi-losophyandtheology.Buttheearlyeditionsareoftenunreliable,whereasthemanuscriptsfrequentlypresentwildlydifferentversionsof
5、thesamework.Theyarewritteninahighlycompressedandar-canesystemofabbreviation,akindofshorthandthatrequiresspecialtrainingtoread;earlyprintededitionsoftenretainthesamesystem.Frequentlythemanuscriptsareincompletelycatalogedornotcata-logedatall,andthustheircontentsarediscove
