2、ce,ornaturalismneedsnoarguing,theimmersionofmedievalthinkersinquestionsabouteternity,God,andtheimmaterialityofintellectcanseemin-comprehensible,ifoccasionallyintriguing.ThisCompanionseekstoenhancefascinationwhilediminishingincomprehension.Thecon-tributorshopetobringreadersintomedievaldiscussionsa
3、sdirectlyaspossible,enablingthemtoappreciateforthemselvesthephilo-sophicalmotivesinstigatingthesediscussionsandtheboldness,sub-tlety,andanalyticrigorwithwhichtheywerecarriedon.Theaimistoexhibitthevarietyandfreshnessofmedievalapproachestoproblemsratherthantoevaluatesolutions.Thisisnottodenythattim
4、elesstruthcanbefoundinthematerialpresented.Manystudentsofmedievalmetaphysicswouldholdthatthedisciplinehadenteredon“thesurepathofascience,”inKant’sphrase,severalcenturiesbe-foreKantrestricteditsscopetolayingbaretheconditionsofpossibleexperience(andwouldattributeKant’sdismissalofearliereffortsas“ra
5、ndomgroping”totypicalEnlightenmentignoranceofmedievalthought).Weareconvinced,however,thattheinsightsofmedievalphilosophyappearmostclearlyinthemidstofthediscussionsinwhichthemedievalsthemselvessoughtthem.Medievaltreatmentsofphilosophicalproblemsarenotasaruleeasytogetthrough.Ifthatwereso,therewould
