2、turesappearedbypermissionofColumbiaUniversityasanarticleintheJournalofPhilosophy.Ihavesincecorrectedandexpandedoneremark;theimprovementcomesinpages56/and61,wheresevenlinesofoldtexthavegivenwaytoapageandahalfofnew.MichaelJubienfoundtheerror.IhadgivenasinglelectureunderthesametitleatYalean
3、dtheUniversityofChicagoasearlyasMay1967,butitwasnonearapproachtowhatisnowbeforeus.Mythoughtsonthemattermaturedappreciablyintheinterveningtenmonths.Tohelporientthereader,thetitleessayisprecededinthevolumeby"SpeakingofObjects."ThiswasmypresidentialviIPrefaceaddresstotheeasterndivisionoft
4、heAmericanPhilosophicalAssociationin1957,anditisreprintedfromtheassociation'sProceedingsandAddresses,1958,withpermission.Thisessaystemmedfrommyworkinprogress,whichin1960becameWordandObject.ConsiderablepartsofSectionsIIandIIIof"SpeakingofObjects"recurverbatiminSections19and25ofWordandOb
5、ject,andotherpartsoftheessayrecurinthatbookinsubstance.ForthatreasonIomitted"SpeakingofObjects"frommyrecentcollectionTheWaysofParadoxandOtherEssays,andhadmeanttoomititfromthepresentvolume.However,BurtonDrebenhaspersuadedmethat"SpeakingofObjects"isstrangelyeflficaciousingivingreadersa
