2、cksonUniversityofMichiganAbstractThisarticleopensbynotingthatpositiveemotionsdonotfitexistingmodelsofemotions.Consequently,anewmodelisadvancedtodescribetheformandfunctionofasubsetofpositiveemotions,includingjoy,interest,contentment,andlove.Thisnewmodelpositsthatthesepositiveemotionsservetobroadena
3、nindividual’smomentarythought–actionrepertoire,whichinturnhastheeffectofbuildingthatindividual’sphysical,intellectual,andsocialresources.Empiricalevidencetosupportthisbroaden-and-buildmodelofpositiveemotionsisreviewed,andimplicationsforemotionregulationandhealthpromotionarediscussed.Eventhoughrese
4、archonemotionshasflourishedinrecentyears,investigationsthatexpresslytargetpositiveemotionsremainfewandfarbetween.Anyreviewofthepsychologicalliteratureonemotionswillshowthatpsychologistshavetypicallyfavorednegativeemotionsintheorybuildingandhypothesistesting.Insodoing,psychologistshaveinadvertently
5、marginalizedtheemotions,suchasjoy,interest,contentment,andlove,thatshareapleasantsubjectivefeel.Todate,then,psychology’sknowledgebaseregardingpositiveemotionsissothinthatsatisfyinganswerstothequestion“Whatgoodarepositiveemotions?”haveyettobearticulated.Thisisunfortunate.Experiencesofpositiveemotio
6、narecentraltohumannatureandcontributerichlytothequalityofpeople’slives(Diener&Larsen,1993;Myers&Diener,1995).Buthow?Inwhichdomains?Throughwhatmechanisms?Theseareempiricalquestionsthatwarrantstudy.Thepurposeofthisarticleistointroduceanewmodeloftheformandfunctionofasubsetofdiscretepositiveemotions.E
