3、niversity.1.IntroductionInthispaper,IoutlinethevariousparametersinvolvedinthecomplexdecisionmakingprocessofaMastersadmissionscommitteeinatopgraduateschoolintheUS.Toclarifythisfurther,(i)ThisreportismainlytargetedatMSapplicants,butalotofitcanbeextendedtoPhDapplicationsaswell.Inm
4、ostcases,therequirementsforaPhDadmitwilljustbeastricterversionofthosementionedhere.(ii)IdonothaveaspecificlistofuniversitiesinmindwhenIsay"atopgraduateschool".Stanford,MIT,UCBerkeleyandCMUarecertainlyupthere,butIamnotparticularlyreferringtoanyspecificlistofgraduateschoolranking
5、s.Inamoregeneralsense,Iamtalkingaboutschoolswherethedefaultattitudeoftheadmissionscommitteeis"rejected,unlessstronglyprovedotherwise"ratherthan"let'sgivehim/herthebenefitofthedoubt".Theseschoolstendtofollowariskminimizationpolicy,andifindoubt,theywouldrejectthecandidateratherth
6、anriskdilutingthequalityoftheincomingbatch.(iii)ThecontenthereistargetedonlyattheapplicantstoUSuniversities.Thoughsomeofitmightbethesame,Ihavenopersonalexperienceregardingtheadmissioncriteriaofgraduateschoolselsewhere.Also,sinceIbelongtoacomputersciencebackgroundandhaveservedin
