3、linethevariousparametersinvolvedinthecomplexdecisionmakingprocessofaMastersadmissionscommitteeinatopgraduateschoolintheUS.Toclarifythisfurther,(i)ThisreportismainlytargetedatMSapplicants,butalotofitcanbeextendedtoPhDapplicationsaswell.Inmostcases,therequirementsforaPhDadmitwilljustbeastricterversi
4、onofthosementionedhere.(ii)IdonothaveaspecificlistofuniversitiesinmindwhenIsay"atopgraduateschool".Stanford,MIT,UCBerkeleyandCMUarecertainlyupthere,butIamnotparticularlyreferringtoanyspecificlistofgraduateschoolrankings.Inamoregeneralsense,Iamtalkingaboutschoolswherethedefaultattitudeoftheadmissio
5、nscommitteeis"rejected,unlessstronglyprovedotherwise"ratherthan"let'sgivehim/herthebenefitofthedoubt".Theseschoolstendtofollowariskminimizationpolicy,andifindoubt,theywouldrejectthecandidateratherthanriskdilutingthequalityoftheincomingbatch.(iii)ThecontenthereistargetedonlyattheapplicantstoUSunive
6、rsities.Thoughsomeofitmightbethesame,Ihavenopersonalexperienceregardingtheadmissioncriteriaofgraduateschoolselsewhere.Also,sinceIbelongtoacomputersciencebackgroundandhaveservedinthecomputerscienceadmissionscommittee,someofmyexamplescouldbecomputerscience(oringeneral,engineering)oriented,buttheysho
