3、actaschemicaldefensesagainstherbivores.C.maculatumwaslargelyfreefromherbivoryintheUnitedStates,untilapproximately30yrago,whenitwasreassociatedviaaccidentalintroductionwithamonophagousEuropeanherbivore,theoecophoridcaterpillarAgonopterixalstroemeriana.Atpresent,A.alstroemerianaisfoundinaconti
4、nuumofreassociationtimeandintensitieswithC.maculatumacrossthecontinent;inthePacificNorthwest,A.alstroemerianacancauseseveredamage,resultinginsomecasesincompletedefoliation.Studiesinbiologicalcontrolandinvasionbiologyhaveyettodeterminewhetherplantsreassociatedwithasignificantherbivorefromtheare
5、aofindigeneityincreasetheirchemicaldefenseinvestmentinareasofintroduction.Inthisstudy,wecomparedthreelocationsintheUnitedStates(NewYork,Washington,andIllinois)whereC.maculatumexperiencesdifferentlevelsofherbivorybyA.alstroemerianatodeterminetheassociationbetweentheintensityoftheinteraction,a
6、smeasuredbydamage,andchemicaldefenseproduction.TotalalkaloidproductioninC.maculatumwaspositivelycorrelatedwithA.alstroemerianaherbivorylevels:plantsfromNewYorkandWashington,withhigherherbivorylevels,investedtwoandfourtimesmoreNtoalkaloidsynthesisthandidplantsfromIllinois.Individualplantswith
