4、forWhistler,asthedenominationcarriedalowermonetaryvaluethanguineas,thequestionofstatusloomedlargetoo.G.W.Smalley,anAmericanjournalistfromtheNewYorkDailyTribune,tookupWhistler'sinvitationtoseethePeacockRoomontwodifferentoccasions.Afterhissecondvisit,andhearingofLeyland'scurs
5、orypayment,SmalleydefendedWhistlerbyrefutingitsimplicationsinprint.Smalleynotedthegreat"differencebetweenupholsters'tricksandthesincerityofanartistofgenius."Nobody,noteven"themostuntrainedeye,"couldmistakethetalentdemonstratedherefortheworkofa"merecraftsman."1ForWhistler,Sm
