2、provetheirforeignlanguagelearning.However,theconventionalforeignlanguageteachinginChinacan’tmeetthispressingdemandofinterculturalcommunication.Studentsmayproducegrammaticallycorrectbutculturallyinappropriatesentences,whichmaycausemisunderstandingswhencommunicatingwithforeigners(胡壮麟,2000:17
3、5-178).Therefore,thenewnationalEnglishcoursestandardsforprimaryandsecondaryschoolspointoutthatforeignlanguageeducationisnolongerasimplelanguage-learningprogram.Theaimofforeignlanguagelearningincludes“culturalknowledge”,“cultureunderstandingorcomprehension”aswellastheinsightandabilityofusin
4、gaforeignlanguage.TheEnglishcoursestandardsforprimaryandsecondaryschoolsinShanghaialsoindicatethattheEnglishcourseshouldlayagoodfoundationfordevelopingthestudents’communicativecompetenceinamulticulturalbackground.Todevelopsuchcompetenceamongtheyounglearnerhasbecomethenewobjectiveinmiddlesc
5、hoolEnglishteaching(Searle,1975:15-20).2.BackgroundoftheproblemWiththepopularizationofmarketeconomyandthefrequentcontactsamongthepeopleindifferentcountries,Chinaisindesperateneedofpeoplewhoarecapableofcommunicatingininterculturalsituations.However,theconventionalforeignlanguageteachinginCh
