1、RemarksofPresidentBarackObamaAsPreparedforDeliveryLandover,MarylandApril2,2011Hello,everybody.I’mspeakingtoyoutodayfromaUPScustomercenterinLandover,Maryland,whereIcametotalkaboutanissuethat’saffectingfamiliesandbusinessesjustlikethisone–therisingpriceofgas,andwhatwecandoasacountr

2、ytoreduceourdependenceonforeignoil.Thisweek,IreleasedaBlueprintforaSecureEnergyFuture.It’sastrategytoreducetheoilweimportfromaroundtheworld,andtomakeoureconomystrongerathome.PartofthisstrategyinvolvesincreasingouroilexplorationrighthereinAmerica.Infact,ouroilproductionlastyearrea

3、cheditshighestlevelsince2003,andwewanttoencouragemoresafe,responsibledrillingwherewecan.Butthetruthis,drillingaloneisnotarealstrategytoreplaceourdependenceonforeignoil.Andthat’sbecauseeventhoughAmericauses25percentoftheworld’soil,wecurrentlyhaveonlyabout2percentoftheworld’soilres

4、erves.Evenifweusedeverylastdropofalltheoilwehave,itwouldn’tbeenoughtomeetourlong-termenergyneeds.So,realenergysecuritycanonlycomeifwefindwaystouselessoil–ifweinvestincleanerfuelsandgreaterefficiency.That’swhatwe’vebeendoingsinceItookoffice.Forexample,wesecuredanagreementfromallth

5、emajorautocompaniestoraisethefuelefficiencyoftheircarsandtrucks.Soifyoubuyanewcar,thebettergasmileageisgoingtosaveyouabout$3,000.Altogether,thiswillsaveusabout1.8billionbarrelsofoilasacountry.Weneedtobuildonthisprogress.Aswemakeourcarsandtrucksmoreefficient,we’vegottoharnessnewte

6、chnologiestofuelourvehicleswitheverythingfrombiofuelstonaturalgastoadvancedbatteries.Andthegoodnewsis,thesetechnologiesaren’tsciencefictionanymore.Theyexisttoday.Already,Americancarcompaniesareproducingelectricvehiclesthatuselittleornogas.AndinnovatorsacrossAmericaaretestingnewpr

7、oductsthatholdincrediblepromisenotjustfornewvehicles,butforcountlessnewjobs.Tohelpjumpstartthismarket,thefederalgovernmenthasdoubledthenumberofcleanenergyvehiclesthatwehaveinourfleet.Inthenextfewyears,we’regoingtoswitchtheentirefleetover.AndI’mhereatUPSbecauseit’snotjustthegovern
