5、eandestatesofhisgreat-uncleWilliam,the5thBaronByron.HismotherproudlytookhimtoEngland,wheretheboyfellinlovewiththeghostlyhallsandspaciousruinsofNewsteadAbbey,whichhadbeenpresentedtotheByronsbyHenryVIII.AfterlivingatNewsteadforawhile,ByronwassenttoschoolinLondon,andin1801hewenttoHarr
6、ow,oneofEngland'smostprestigiousschools.In1803hefellinlovewithhisdistantcousin,MaryChaworth,whowasolderandalreadyengaged,andwhensherejectedhimshebecamethesymbolforByronofidealizedandunattainablelove.HeprobablymetAugustaByron,hishalfsisterfromhisfather'sfirstmarriage,thatsameyear.In
7、1805ByronenteredTrinityCollege,Cambridge,wherehepiledupdebtsatanalarmingrateandindulgedintheconventionalvicesofundergraduatesthere.Thesignsofhisincipientsexualambivalencebecamemorepronouncedinwhathelaterdescribedas“aviolent,thoughpure,loveandpassion”forayoungchorister,JohnEdleston.
