3、oftenincorporatingtourism,leisure,specialityfoodproductionandconsumptionande-commerce.WithinthecontextofdebatesaboutintegratedandterritorialapproachestoruraldevelopmentinEurope’s‘laggingregions’,thispaperintroducesthenotionof‘integratedruraltourism’(IRT)anddescribes
4、thevariousmethodsofresearchusedinanEUresearchprojectthatformsthebasisofthisspecialedition.IRTistheorizedastourismexplicitlylinkedtotheeconomic,social,cultural,naturalandhumanstructuresofthelocalitiesinwhichittakesplace.TheargumentisthatIRT–asatheoryandapproach–leads
5、tomoresustainabletourism(broadlyconceived)thanotherformsoftourismbecauseitcreatespowerfulnetworkconnec-tionsbetweensocial,cultural,economicandenvironmentalresources.ThenotionofIRTisalsointendedtoopenuppracticalwaysofthinkingaboutimprovinglinkagesbetweentourismandloc
