2、esinthesameconversationorutteranceoccursinmanybilingualormultilingualcommunities.Thetermusedtodefinesuchoccurrencesiscodeswitching.Linguistsaroundtheworld(Gardner-Chloros,1997;Wardhaugh,1998;Holmes,2001;Ayeomoni,2006)regardcodeswitchingasacommonandnon-isola
3、tedphenomenon.InMalaysia,codeswitchingisnotanexceptionasthediversityoflanguagesspokenbythevariousracesofpeoplecontributestothelinguisticpractice.Previousstudies(Kow,2003;Then&Ting,2009)showthatcodeswitchingoccursinformalclassroomsettings.Relatingcodeswitchi
4、ngtopresentpracticesintheMalaysianschoolsystem,thisstudyinvestigatestheattitudesofteachersandthetypesandfunctionsofcodeswitchingemployedbyEnglishlanguageteachersinsecondaryschools.ItalsoreportsonhowcodeswitchingaffectsthedeliveryoftheEnglishlanguagecurricul
5、um.Atotalof42Englishlanguageteacherswereselectedasrespondentsforthisstudy.Respondentswererequiredtocompleteasurveyquestionnairebyindicatingtheirattitude,usageandopinionofcodeswitchingintheclassroom.Thefindingsindicatethatthemajorityofteachershavepositiveatt

8、elanguagewassalientasitwasproclaimedtheofficiallanguageofthecountryfortenyearsafterindependence,from1957to1967.BahasaMalaysiawasthenationallanguage.WiththeintroductionoftheLanguageActof1967,thestatusof
