4、n-resonantlaser-inducedthermalacoustics(LITA)tomeasureasinglecomponentofvelocityisdescribed.Neithermolecular(e.g.NO2)norparticulateseedisaddedtotheflow.Innon-resonantLITAtwobeamssplitfromashort-pulsepumplaserarecrossed;interferenceproducestwocounterpropagatingsoundwav

5、esbyelectrostriction.ACWprobelaserincidentonthesoundwavesattheproperangleisdiffractedtowardsadetector.MeasurementofthebeatingbetweentheDoppler-shiftedlightandahighlyattenuatedportionoftheprobebeamallowsdeterminationofonecomponentofflowvelocity,speedofsound,andtemperat

6、ure.ThesoundwavesessentiallytaketheplaceoftheparticulateseedusedinLDV.Thevelocimeterwasusedtostudytheflowbehindarearward-facingstepinNASALangleyResearchCenter’sBasicAerodynamicsResearchTunnel.Comparisonismadewithpitot-staticprobedatainthefreestreamovertherange0m/s–55m
