2、990s,analyzingChina’sminzu(people/group)identificationanddeconstructingtheChinesegovernment’sconstructionoftheethnicminoritieswithinitsbordershasbecomeaknowledgegrowthpointintheWest.Mono-graphsanddissertationsrelatedtothistopichaveappearedinrapidsucc
3、ession,andminorityethnicgroupsincludingtheHui,Yi,Miao,Yao,andUighurhavebeendeconstructedoneaftertheother.1ItisunknownwhentheTibetansandMongolswillsimilarlybecomethefocusofsuchanalysis,orwhetherithasbeensomehowdecidedthatthey(oranyoftheremainingforty-
4、nineethnicminorities)simplydonotneedtobeapproachedassuch.Broadlyspeaking,therearetwoapproachestotheaforementioneddecon-structionfuror:(1)Revealingthatthereexistdifferencesanddislocationswithintheseethnicgroupsintermsoflanguage,culture,socialeconomics
5、,andterritorialdistribution,andtherebyarguingthat,althoughtheChinesegovernment/ethnologistsclaimthattheyhavedefinedChina’sethnicminori-tiesobjectivelyandscientificallyinaccordancewithStalin’stheoryforiden-tifyingethnicnationalities,theseidentifiedmin
