4、ervicessuchasbettershelfarrangements,shelf-spacemanagement,anddesignandmanagementofin-storedisplays.Inthispaper,weexaminewhenandwhyaretailermayengageonemanufacturerexclusivelyasacategorycaptaintoprovidesuchserviceandtheimplications.Wefindthatdemandsubstituta

5、bilityofcompetingbrandsgivesrisetoaserviceefficiencyeffect—servicethatexpandsthecategoryismoreeffectiveinincreasingamanufacturer’ssalesandmarginthanservicethatshiftsdemandfromarival’sbrand.Weshowthattheserviceefficiencyeffectmaymotivateacategorycaptaintoprovi

6、deaservicethatbenefitsallbrandsinthecategoryeventhoughdoingsoismorecostly.Wefurthershowthat,incategoriesthatarelesspricecompetitive,thereishighercompetitionbetweenmanufacturerstobecomethecategorycaptain.Consequently,aretailermayobtainbetterservicebyusingacat
