1、MetonymyasaprototypicalcategoryYVESPEIRSMANandDIRKGEERAERTS*AbstractAdefinitionofmetonymythathasgainedsomepopularityinCognitiveLin-guisticscontrastsmetonymicalsemanticshiftswithinadomainordomainmatrixwithmetaphoricalshiftsthatcrossdomainboundaries.Inthepastfewyears,however,this
2、definitionofmetonymyhasbecomesubjecttomoreandmorecriticism,inthesensethatitreliestoomuchonthevaguenotionsofdomainsordomainmatricestobefullyreliable.Inthisarticle,weaddressthisproblembyfocusingonanonunitary,prototypicaldefinitionofcontiguity(theconceptthatusedtobeseenasthedefining
3、featureofmetonymybeforeCognitiveLinguisticsintroduceddomainsanddomainmatrices).Onthebasisofthetraditionalpre-structuralistliteratureonmetonymy,weidentifyalargenumberoftypicalmetonymicalpatterns,andshowthattheycanbeclassifiedintermsofthetypeofcontiguitytheyaremotivatedby.Weargue
4、thatmetonymies,startingfromspatialpart-wholecontiguityasthecoreofthecategory,canbeplottedagainstthreedimensions:strengthofcontact(goingfrompart-wholecontainmentoverphysicalcontacttoadjacencywithoutcontact),boundedness(involvinganextensionofthepart-wholerelationshiptowardsunbou
