4、ctionoftextbooksandmagazines,andinthebuildingofapublishingorganization,torespondtothedemandforadetailedexplanationofthescientificprinciplesonwhichthesystemwasconstructed.Atoddmoments,asopportunityofferedandasthemooddictated,Imadeshorthandnotationsforaseriesofarticles

5、onthesubject.AfewofthearticleswerepublishedintheGreggShorthandMagazine(England)someyearsago,butthereductioninthesizeofthatmagazineonaccountofwarconditionsrendereditnecessarytodiscontinuetheseries.Sincethensomanyteachersandwritersofthesystem,onbothsidesoftheAtlantic

6、,haveurgedmetocompletetheseriesthatIdecidedtodoso,andtopublishtheminbookform.ThefactthatthearticleswerefirstwrittenforamagazinepublishedinEnglandwillexplaintoAmericanreadersthenumerousreferencestoIsaacPitmanShorthand,asystemwhichisnowlittleusedinAmericaoutsideofNewY

7、orkCityandsomepartsofCanada,andalsowhysomanyquotationsfromwell-knownauthorsandwritersofothersystemsareusedinsupportofeachprincipleexpounded.IngivingthesequotationsIhadinmindthefactthatinEnglandthereismorereverencefor“precedent”and“authority”thanisthecaseinthiscount
