3、bookMetaphorWeLivebywrittenbyLakoffandJohnson(1980)presentstheconceptualmetaphortheory.Theypointoutthatmetaphorcanconstructthebasicschemaofperceivingexperienceandtheworld.Metaphorisapowerfulcognitivetoolforustoconceptualizetheabstractcategory(Ungerer&Smith,1996

4、:114).Itisthesolemethodforpeopletounderstandthecognitiveabilityofhumanbeingandanessentialwaytodealwithproblemsofthelanguagelearningandteaching(Mey,1993:301).Thusmetaphorplaysaveryimportantroleinunderstandinglanguageandusinglanguagetodescribetheworld.Metaphorexi

5、stsinourdailylifeincludingthethought,languageandbehavior.Cognitivelinguisticpointsoutthatpeopleusuallyunderstandandperceivetheabstractandunfamiliarthingsintermsoftheconcreteandfamiliarthingsandthusacognitiveapproachoccurs.Ifmetaphorplaysacentralroleinunderstand

6、ingandexpressinghumanexperience,wecansupposeitisthecohesiveforceindiscourse（DianePonterotto，2000：238-298）.Inthehistoryofrhetoricandpoeticsstudies,metaphorisconsideredastheprincipleofdiscourseconstruction.Thescholarsofdiscourseanalysisalwayssuggestthatitisveryne

7、cessarytostudythecohesivefunctionofmetaphorindiscourse（Kovecses，2002:29).Scholarshavealreadydoneabundantresearchontheessence,structureandfeaturesofmetaphorverysuccessfully,butrareresearchhavedoneonthecohesivefunctionofmetaphorinnewsdiscourse.Accordingtotheresea
