1、Abstract:Anylanguagebearsalotofculturalconnotations,languageisthevehicleofculture,andvocabularyisthemostactivepartoflanguage.Animalmetaphors,withtheculturalconnotationsoftheirown,arewidelyemployedinbothEnglishandChineselanguage.Thisarticlecomparesandanalys

4、shedconnotationsinalllanguages,thatis,peopleassociatetheirfeelingsandemotions,evenhappeningsandnaturalphenomenawithvariousanimalswhicharethoughttorepresentdifferentcharacterslikepeople,orserveasomens.Manyanimalshavebecomeakindofsymbolinpeople’sthinking,and
5、thissymbolisreflectedinthelanguage.Inrecentyears,manylinguists,asDeYanchang,HeZiran,HuWenzhong,havepaidmuchattentiontocross-culturalcommunication.Theydevotemuchtopragmatics,comparisonoflanguagesandculturesbetweenEnglishandChinese.II.LiteraturereviewBecause
6、connotationsofanimalwordsinonelanguagedonotnecessarilycoincidewiththoseinChineseandEnglishandscatteredinmanybooks.Inordertofindhowanimalsstandfordifferentsymbols,over200questionnairesweredistributedinChineseandEnglishrespectivelytoChineseandEnglishspeaking
7、people(DeZhang,1997).InawaytheopinionsthusgatheredcanrepresenttheEnglishspeakingpeopleandChinesethoughtheyareneitheraccuratenorveryauthentic,butasacomparativeorcontrastivestudy.Thefirstpartofquestionnaireintendstothesymbolismofsomeanimalsstandingfor.Theres
