2、y-strickenareas.Morethan30millionchildrenbetweentheagesof6-14areunabletoattendschoolorareforcedtodropout,with84percentofthetotalnumberofrelatedyoungsterscomingfromthecountryside.Eachyear,thereare1millionchildrendeprivedofeducationduetopoverty.Agroupof11drop-outs,inc
3、ludingZhangShengliinTaomugedaVillage,LaiyuanCounty,HebeiProvince,receivedgrant-in-aidscholarshipsfromtheCYLCentralCommitteeonOctober17,1989.Thereafter,thecommitteerespondedtotheseveresituationinpoverty-strickenareasbyestablishingtheChinaYouthDevelopmentFoundationonO
4、ctober30,1989inordertosubsidizechildrenunabletogotoschool.Thepurposeofthefoundationwasto"helpchildrenwithfundscollectedfromsociety."Subsidizationmethodsinclude:1)establishinglong-termgrant-in-aidprogramstohelpeducationallydeprivedyoungstudentswithgoodcharacterreturn
5、toschoolinspiteofpoorfamilyconditions;2)buildingandrefurbishingschoolsforpoverty-strickenvillages;3)providingteachingaids,writingmaterialsandtextbooks;4)andprovidingspecialscholarshipsenablingoutstandingprimaryandmiddleschoolstudentsinpoverty-strickenareastoreceivec
6、ollegeeducation.Duringtheyear,theCYLsponsoredthe"ProjectHope"aimedatsupportingyoungdropoutsandpromotingthedevelopmentofbasiceducationinpoverty-strickenareas.ProjectHopehasattractedtheattentionandsupportofallsocialcircles.DengXiaopingwrotetheinscription"ProjectHope"o
7、nSeptember5,1990,tocommemoratetheactivity.OnNovember12,1991,JiangZemin,general-secretaryoftheCommunistPartyofChina(CPC),wrote:"SupportingProjectHopeandcaringforthegrowthofchildren".AninscriptionpennedbyPremierLiPengonMarch22,1992,read:"ProjectHopehelpspoorchildren.P
