3、ducation;andduetoanincreaseintheactivismofblacks,fightingforequalrights.MartinLutherKing,Jr.,aBaptistminister,wasadrivingforceinthepushforracialequalityinthe1950'sandthe1960's.In1963,KingandhisstafffocusedonBirmingham,Alabama.Theymarchedandprotestednon-violently,raisingtheireoflocalo
4、fficialswhoslicedwatercannonandpolicedogsonthemarchers,whoseranksincludedteenagersandchildren.Thebadpublicityandbreak-downofbusinessforcedthewhiteleadersofBirminghamtoconcedetosomeanti-segregationdemands.ThrustintothenationalspotlightinBirmingham,wherehewasarrestedandjailed,Kingorgan
5、izedamassivemarchonWashington,DC,onAugust28,1963.OnthestepsoftheLincolnMemorial,heevokedthenameofLincolninhis"IHaveaDream"speech,whichiscreditedwithmobilizingsupportersofdesegregationandpromptedthe1964CivilRightsAct.Thenextyear,KingwasawardedtheNobelPeacePrize.Thefollowingistheexactt
