2、ry,westwardexpansionintheterritoryoftheUnitedStatesintheprocessofsettingupanewseriesofWesternstates,asiscalledthefamous"WestwardMovement”.Themovementmadethelaborforce5layoutofUnitedStateschanged;itpromotedtheformationofunified,domesticmarketsanddevelopedrapidoftheeasternandwesterncommercialcomplemen
3、tary.However,ontheotherhand,itmadethecontradictionbetweenthetwokindsofeconomicascended.Inthemid-19thcentury,theconflictwasinthemostintenseasthenorthernbourgeoisiesandthepeasantssupportedtoconversetherawmaterialsanddomesticmarketswhostressedtoenlargeexportsandfreelaborforce,whilethesouthernslave-owne
4、rsattemptedtoextendedslaverytotheWestwhentheytransportedthecottontoEnglandandimportedindustrialproductsinsteadinthemeantime.In1860,AbrahamLincoln,thecandidateofRepublicanParty,waselectedpresident.Afterthen,elevenstatessecededfromtheUnioninsuccessionandcreatedaseparateConfederatednation,whichresulted
5、inthebreakoutoftheCivilWarinApril,1861.Atthebeginningofthewar,thestrengthoftheNorthfarexceededthatoftheSouthwithagreatadvantage.Besides,theNorthhadadvancedindustry,railwaynetworkconnectionsandrichreserveoffoodwhiletheSouthhadevennoindustryorrailway.However,themilitaryofSouthwasfullypreparedwithallth
6、earming,equipmentandmoresophisticatedmilitaryhardware.Moreover,Lincolnintheearlyyearsofthewar9saimwasjusttorestoretheunityoftheSouthandtheNorth,sothegovernmentdidn^tdeclaretheliberationoftheNorthernslaves.Therefore,inthefirstphaseofthewar,theNorthsuffereddefeatinthemilitary,inspiteofaseriesofbrillia
