2、ouwhohavetraveledfromfarandwide.Youreffortswillremindusthatlifeisourmostpreciouspossessionandthatweneedtofindaplanet-wideapproachifwearetohaveanyhopeofprotectingi(・IwouldevengosofarastosaythatweneedtoglobalizeoureffortstofightthethreatofAIDS;akindofglobalization,withthesol
3、epurposeofsavinglives,givesustheopportunitytorethinktheworldinthespiritofatrueglobalcommunity.Icanstillrecallthefear,thehostilityfeltbysomewhenwefirstbegantohearaboutAIDSsometwenty-fiveyearsago.AndwhenIheardpeoplearoundmesayingthatthisdiseasewastheresultof"deviant”behaviou
4、r,apunishmentagainstthosewhoarecondemned,Icouldbarelycontainmyanger.AIDSbroughtwithitashamethatcouldnotbenamed.Butaswenowknow,AIDSknowsnoboundaries,norhasitanyregardforourprejudicesorthewaysinwhichweostracizeandabandononeanother.Isthatnotreasonenoughtoputthoseprejudicestor
5、estandcometogethertofightthisuniversalthreat?AIDSisnowthefourthleadingcauseofdeathintheworld・AIDSindiscriminatelystrikeschildren,women,andmen;AIDSdevastatesnationaleconomies;AIDSdestabilizescommunitiesaroundtheworld.TakeforexamplesubSaharanAfrica,wherethesituationisthemost
6、alarming.Justoveronetenthoftheworld'spopulationlivesinthatarea,includingnearly64percentofallpeoplelivingwithHIV.Twomillionofthemarechildrenundertheageoffifteen.Thesituationisdire.Wemustactnow.WecannotremainindifferenttothedevastatingattackthattheAIDSistaking.Thoseofuswholi
7、veinsuchaffluentcountrieshaveamoralresponsibilitytodosomethingandworktogether.CanandaisamongthecountriesthatansweredtheUnitedNations*callinJune2001tohaltthespreadofAIDS,andsignedtheDeclarationofCommitmentonHIVAIDS・Wesupportacoordinatedeffortonallfronts,fromgovernments,the
