2、rdflu.AllthishadcausedasignificantimpactonthetravelandtourismindustryinMalaysia.Thenumbersofinboundandoutboundtouristshavebeendecreasingduetoanavoidanceoftravel.TourismarrivalstoMalaysiadroppedfrom13.29millionin2002to10.58millionin2003(fellby20.4%).Howeverthisdecreasewasnotasser
3、iousasthosethatwereexperiencedbysomeofMalaysia’sneighboringcountrieslikeSingaporeandIndonesia.ThiswasperhapsduetotheaggressivepromotionalactivitiesbytheMalaysiaTourismPromotionBoard(TourismMalaysia).TourismMalaysia’saggressivepromotionsandtheeconomicreliefpackageextendedbythegov
4、ernmenttotheplayersinthetravelindustryenabledtheindustrytorecoverquitewell.ThepromotionaleffortsofTourismMalaysiaaswellasMalaysia’sincreasinglystrongreputationasacenterforinternationalevents,forexampletheOICConference,theF1GrandPrix,etc.,boostedthesloweconomyandensurethatthebala
5、nceoftourismpaymentsstillremainpositive.Furthermore,duetoBankNegaraMalaysia’spolicyonkeepingtheUS$pegforthepastfewyears,therelativelyweakerMalaysiancurrencyhasbecomeapositivefactorforinboundtourism,whilemakingoutboundtourismmoreexpensive.Atthesametime,domestictourismhasbeenstead
6、ilyincreasingovertheperiod,rising11%in2002to22.2milliontrips.ThisisbecauseTourismMalaysiabycarryingoutprogrammessuchasCuti-cutiMalaysiathatareaimedatencouragingdomestictravelhasundoubtedlycontributedtotheincrease(MalaysiaTourismPromotionBoard,2004).However,thehospitalityindustry
7、thatwasstillexperiencingsevereoversupplyandoccupancyrateshavebeenseverelyaffectedbytheSARSandbirdflucrisis.Industrysalesgrewin2002butexperiencedadrasticdecreasein2003.Theindustrywashighlycompetitiveespeciallywiththeopeningofmorehotels.Thenumberofhotelssupplyhasincreased5.7%andth
