2、ngs,theSevereAcuteRespiratorySyndromeSARS,andbirdflu.AllthishadcausedasignificantimpactonthetravelandtourismindustryinMalaysia.Thenumbersofinboundandoutboundtouristshavebeendecreasingduetoanavoidanceoftravel.TourismarrivalstoMalaysiadroppedfrom13.29mi
3、llionin2002to10.58millionin2003fellby20.4%.HoweverthisdecreasewasnotasseriousasthosethatwereexperiencedbysomeofMalaysia’sneighboringcountrieslikeSingaporeandIndonesia.ThiswasperhapsduetotheaggressivepromotionalactivitiesbytheMalaysiaTourismPromotionBo
4、ardTourismMalaysia.TourismMalaysia’saggressivepromotionsandtheeconomicreliefpackageextendedbythegovernmenttotheplayersinthetravelindustryenabledtheindustrytorecoverquitewell.ThepromotionaleffortsofTourismMalaysiaaswellasMalaysia’sincreasinglystrongrep
5、utationasacenterforinternationalevents,forexampletheOICConference,theF1GrandPrix,etc.,boostedthesloweconomyandensurethatthebalanceoftourismpaymentsstillremainpositive.Furthermore,duetoBankNegaraMalaysia’spolicyonkeepingtheUS$pegforthepastfewyears,ther
6、elativelyweakerMalaysiancurrencyhasbecomeapositivefactorforinboundtourism,whilemakingoutboundtourismmoreexpensive.Atthesametime,domestictourismhasbeensteadilyincreasingovertheperiod,rising11%in2002to22.2milliontrips.ThisisbecauseTourismMalaysiabycarry
7、ingoutprogrammessuchasCuti-cutiMalaysiathatareaimedatencouragingdomestictravelhasundoubtedlycontributedtotheincreaseMalaysiaTourismPromotionBoard,2004.However,thehospitalityindustrythatwasstillexperiencingsevereoversupplyandoccupancyrateshavebeensever
8、elyaffectedbytheSARSandbirdflucrisis.Industrysalesgrewin2002butexperiencedadrasticdecreasein2003.Theindustrywashighlycompetitiveespeciallywiththeopeningofmorehotels.Thenumberofhotelssupplyhasincreased5.7%andthenumberofhotelroomssupplyhasincrea
