2、ndbirdflu.AllthishadcausedasignificantimpactonthetravelandtourismindustryinMalaysia.Thenumbersofinboundandoutboundtouristshavebeendecreasingduetoanavoidanceoftravel.TourismarrivalstoMalaysiadroppedfrom13.29millionin2002to10.58millionin2003(fellby20.4%).Howeverthisdecreasewasnotasse

3、riousasthosethatwereexperiencedbysomeofMalaysia’sneighboringcountrieslikeSingaporeandIndonesia.ThiswasperhapsduetotheaggressivepromotionalactivitiesbytheMalaysiaTourismPromotionBoard(TourismMalaysia).TourismMalaysia’saggressivepromotionsandtheeconomicreliefpackageextendedbythegover

4、nmenttotheplayersinthetravelindustryenabledtheindustrytorecoverquitewell.ThepromotionaleffortsofTourismMalaysiaaswellasMalaysia’sincreasinglystrongreputationasacenterforinternationalevents,forexampletheOICConference,theF1GrandPrix,etc.,boostedthesloweconomyandensurethatthebalanceof

5、tourismpaymentsstillremainpositive.Furthermore,duetoBankNegaraMalaysia’spolicyonkeepingtheUS$pegforthepastfewyears,therelativelyweakerMalaysiancurrencyhasbecomeapositivefactorforinboundtourism,whilemakingoutboundtourismmoreexpensive.Atthesametime,domestictourismhasbeensteadilyincre

6、asingovertheperiod,rising11%in2002to22.2milliontrips.ThisisbecauseTourismMalaysiabycarryingoutprogrammessuchasCuti-cutiMalaysiathatareaimedatencouragingdomestictravelhasundoubtedlycontributedtotheincrease(MalaysiaTourismPromotionBoard,2004).However,thehospitalityindustrythatwasstil

7、lexperiencingsevereoversupplyandoccupancyrateshavebeenseverelyaffectedbytheSARSandbirdflucrisis.Industrysalesgrewin2002butexperiencedadrasticdecreasein2003.Theindustrywashighlycompetitiveespeciallywiththeopeningofmorehotels.Thenumberofhotelssupplyhasincreased5.7%andthenumberofhotel
