2、r,2014ABSTRACTTherehavebeenmanystudiesontheverbsofplacement(VOPforshort)andtheconstructionscontainingtheseverbs.However,thesepreviousstudieshavenotpaidsufficientattentiontothedifferencesexistingamongthevariousChineseconstructionscontainingVOPaswellasthosee
3、xistingbetweentheChineseconstructionscontainingVOPandtheirEnglishcounterparts.ThispapermakesacomparisonofthosedifferenttypesofChineseconstructionscontainingVOP,anditalsocomparestheseChineseconstructionswiththeirEnglishcounterparts.Besides,itattemptstoaccou
4、ntforsuchdifferencesinrelationtotheNormalStressConstraint(NSC),thePost-verbalConstraintaswellastheL/S-syntaxdistinctionmadeinthegenerativetheoryofsyntax.First,theChineseconstructionNP1+V+NP2+PLocisdifferentfromtheotherconstructionscontainingVOPinthatinthis
5、construction,theobjectandthelocativeprepositionalphraseco-occuraftertheverb.IntheotherChineseconstructionscontainingVOP,however,eithertheobjectorthelocativeprepositionalphraseoccursaftertheverb.AlltheconstructionsinthelattergroupcomplywiththeNSCandPost-ver
6、balConstraintwhereastheconstructionNP1+V+NP2+PLocapparentlydoesnot.However,ifweregardthisconstructionasapivotalconstruction,wheretheverb-likeitemzai(在)takingthePpositionactsasapredicateelementcapableofassigningthenormalstresstothelocativenoun,thentheconstr
7、uctioninquestiondoesnotviolateNSC.Moreover,thispivotalconstructionmaybeanalyzedasbeingcomprisedoftwoseparableclauses:NP1+V+NP2andNP2+PLoc.Ineachofthem,onlytheobjectoccursaftertheverb.Theconstructionthereforedoesn’tviolatethePost-verbalConstraint,either.Sec
