5、gratetheseconditionsbysuggestingthatlaughterandamusementresultfromviolationsthataresimultaneouslyseenasbenign.Weinvestigatedthreeconditionsthatmakeaviolationbenignandthushumorous:(a)thepresenceofanalternativenormsuggestingthatthesituationisacceptable,(b)weakcommitmenttotheviolate

6、dnorm,and(c)psychologicaldistancefromtheviolation.Wetestedthebenign-violationhypothesisinthedomainofmoralpsychology,wherethereisastrongdocumentedassociationbetweenmoralviolationsandnegativeemotions,particularlydisgust.Fiveexperimentalstudiesshowthatbenignmoralviolationstendtoelic

7、itlaughterandamusementinadditiontodisgust.Furthermore,seeingaviolationasbothwrongandnotwrongmediatesbehavioraldisplaysofhumor.Ouraccountisconsistentwithevolutionaryaccountsoflaughter,explainshumoracrossmanydomains,andsuggeststhathumorcanaccompanynegativeemotion.Keywordshumor,mora
