3、iousnessandculture,symbolscanfacilitateanacceptanceofthenewregimeandwhatitstandsfor.Symbolscanlegitimateactionandbeliefand,byhelpingtodefinemanyofthecollectivevaluesthatunderpinthecommunity,helptoidentifytheboundsofthesocietyandtheprinciplesbywhichitisgoverned.Overwhelmingly,po
4、liticalsymbolismlegitimatestheregime’spowerstructure.Accordingly,whenaregimefalls,itssuccessorwillbeanxioustoreplacethesymboliccultureofthefallenregimebyanewonebettersuitedtoitsends.Thegenerationofnewsymbolslikeflags,coatsofarms,andanthems,thedestructionofoldandconstructionofne
5、wmonuments,thecreationofnewritualsortheinjectionofnewcontentintoexistingrituals,andeventhereworkingofthelanguage(throughtheinjectionofnewwords,thechangingofthemeaningofexistingterms,andtheeliminationofsomewords)inordertoinvestitwithanewethoshaveallbeenimportanttothecreationofan
6、ewregime’ssymbolicculture.Acentralcomponentofthecreationofanewsymboliccultureistherenamingofstreetandplacenames.Theseareimportantbecausetheycombineageographicalsenseofdirectionandplacewithanintellectual,perhapsevenideological,senseofdirectionandplace.Functionally,placenamesenab
