3、dingoverseasoilsuppliesfromtheMiddleEast,diversifyingitsimportingsourcesbyreachingouttoAfrica,Russia,CentralAsiaandtheAmericas,andsecuringoiltransportroutes.ThisarticlearguesthatChina’soildiplomacystrengthensitstieswithoil-producingnationsandcomplicatesthosewithoil-impo

4、rtingnations.Nevertheless,contrarytopessimisticpredictions,China’soildiplomacyhasneitherupsettheUSA’sfundamentalpoliciestowardsIraqandIran,norhasitgeneratedarmedclashesintheSouthChinaSea.ChinahaslargelyaccommodatedtheUSAintheseareasandhasforgedjointeffortsinenergyexplora

5、tionwithitsAsianneighbours,exceptforJapan.China’sbenignoildiplomacycanbeexplainedbytheminorroleofoilimportsinitsenergyconsumptionand,moreimportantly,byChina’speaceful-risestrategy.Oilhaslongbeenviewedasastrategicresourcefornations.Chinaisnowtheworld’ssecondlargestoil-co
