5、ntactandundisturbedrootsofone-year-oldDouglasfirseedlings,Pseudotsugamenziesiivar.glauca[Beissn]Franco,weremeasuredatexperimentallyvariedsoilcarbondioxideconcentrations([CO2]).UseofspeciallydesignedrootboxesandaCO2gas-flowcompensatingsystemdesignedaroundaninfraredgasanalyzer(IRGA)allowedcontrolled
6、deliveryofCO2torootsandsimultaneousmeasurementsofCO2releasedbyroots.Rootrespirationraterespondedtoeachinlet[CO2],independentofwhetherthepreviousconcentrationhadbeenhigherorlower,withintwotothreehours(pairedttest=0-041,P=0-622,andn=13).Totalandbasalrespirationratesdecreasedexponentiallyassoil[CO2]r
7、osefrom130ppm,wellbelowatmospheric[CO2],to7015ppm,aconcentrationnotuncommoninfieldsoils.Analysesofvariance(ANOVA)showedthattheeffectsofsoil[CO2]onratesoftotalandbasalrootrespirationwerestatisticallysignificant.Ro
