5、ionratesduringthegrowingseasonvariedfromMarch/AprilingrasslandstoJuly–Septemberforallotherbiomes.Biomeswithoverallstrongestrelationshipbetweensoilrespirationandsoiltemperaturewerefromthedeciduousand2mixedforests(R‡0.65).Maximumsoilrespirationwasweaklyrelatedtomaximumfineroot22biomass(R

6、=0.28)andpositivelyrelatedtothepreviousyears’annuallitterfall(R=0.46).PublishedratesofannualsoilrespirationwerelinearlyrelatedtoLAIandfinerootcarbon22(R=0.48,0.47),aswellasnetprimaryproduction(NPP)(R=0.44).At10sites,maximumgrowingseasonRswasweaklycorrelatedwithannualGPPestimatedfromedd

7、ycovariance2towersites(R=0.29;p<0.05),andannualsoilrespirationandtotalgrowingseasonRswerenotcorrelatedwithannualGPP(p>0.1).Yet,previousstudiesindicatecorrelationsonshortertimescaleswithinsite(e.g.,weekly,monthly).EstimatesofannualGPPfromtheBiome-BGCmodel2werestronglycorrelatedwithobse
