4、es,occupyaspecialplaceintheimaginationofobserversintheOECDandelsewhere.Despitetheirlowincomes,theirsheersizecombinedwithrapidgrowthmeansthattheymakeasubstantialandrapidlygrowingcontributiontoworldoutput.Thesuccessorfailureofeachcountrytomaintaintheirrapidgrowthintothefut
5、urewillhaveatremendousimpactnotonlyontheirowneconomiesbutontheworldeconomyasawhole.Moreover,withpopulationsof1.3and1.1billion,respectively,theirrapidgrowthhasthepotentialtoraiselivingstandardssignificantlyforathirdoftheworld’spopulation,bringinghundredsofmillionsofpeople
6、outofpovertyandcreatingamiddleclassthatrivalstheEUandUSinbothsizeandincome.Inbothcountries,growthhasacceleratedinrecentdecadesastradeliberalisationandmarket-orientedstructuralreformshavedeepened.Aglanceatbothcountries’experiencesuggestsanumberofsimilaritiesintheirreformp
7、aths.Despiteverydifferentpoliticalsystems,bothcountriesfollowedareformpaththatmarkedlyreducedtheroleofthegovernmentineconomicactivityandallowedagreaterdegreeofopennesstoforeigntrade.ReformstartedearlierinChinathaninIndia.Moreover,theopeningtotradehasproceededatamuchmorer
