2、rnpartofLarimerCounty,allofWeld,Morgan,Logan,Sedgwick,andPhillipsCounties,andpartsofAdams,Arapahoe,Washington,andYumaCounties.Itmeasuresabout150milesfromeasttowestandabout80milesfromnorthtosouth.AnarrowstripofthisregionalongthenorthboundaryofColo•radoandmuchofitseasternhalfarecoveredbyne
3、arlycontinuousbedsofcomparativelyrecentgravelandsandwhicheffectivelyhidethebedrockformationsoverlargeareas.ThefieldinvestigationswerethereforeconcentratedinandnearLarimer,Weld,Morgan,andLoganCounties,andtheareashownontheaccompanyinggeo•logicmap(pi.14)doesnotextendtotheeastboundaryoftheSt
4、ate.TherelationsofthemappedareatoitssurroundingsareshowninFigure4.OILANDGASDEVELOPMENTINNORTHEASTERNCOLORADOTheoccurrenceofoilincommercialquantitiesinthesmalloilfieldnearBoulder,Colo.,andthepresenceofseveraldevelopedoilfieldsinWyominghaveformanyyearscalledattentiontotheinterveningterrito
5、ryasapossiblesourceofpetroleum.Desultorydrillingatwidelyscatteredlocalitiesandatvariousdatesfailed,however,foralongtime,toprovethateitheroilorgaswaspresent,anditwasnotuntil1923thatthefirstsuccessfulwellwascompleted.Priorto1915theanticlinalfoldsnorthofFortCollinshadbeenrecognizedbyseveral
6、geologists,amongwhommaybenotedJuniusHenderson,oftheUniversityofColorado,R.D.George,StategeologistofColorado,R.C.Hills,andC.A.Fisher.Inthatyear6566COFTEIBUTIONSTOECONOMICGEOLOGY,1921,PAETIEawellwasdrilledbythePoudreOil&GasCo.intheSW.%NE.%sec.31,T.9N.,R.68W.,1"atabouttheonlypointontheantic
7、linewherethedipinbothdirectionsisplainlyvisible."Thewellwasdrilledtoadepthofnearly4,000feetandwasabandonedafterobtainingnomorethanshowingsofoilandgas.In1917and1918geologistsoftheRoxanaPetroleumCorporationspentseveralmonthsindetailedgeologicexaminationoftheregionnorthofFor
